“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.”
– Psalm 118:22.
Jesus used a lot of parables in his teaching, and we think he was onto something. Storytelling can be a powerful carrier of truth, making it relatable and familiar and giving it traction in the everyday.
In the mid-2000s, three longtime friends – a playwright, an actress and a professional scenic designer – stumbled into an opportunity for drama ministry together in Sacramento. From their church families rose unexpected choreographers, stage managers, and gangly teenagers who would go on to acting careers. The Capstone Theatre Company became a laboratory for drama ministry originality – sometimes quirky, sometimes corny, and always straining for new ways to tell the story of God’s transforming love through Christ.
Know what we discovered? There’s great connection in our common story. There’s great healing in laughter. There’s something bonding about taking a journey together, even a fictional one. And the realest ministry in any drama ministry is always backstage, in the lobby, and in the green room.
For Don Bosley (the playwright), Kristin Klonowski (the actress), and her husband John Klonowski (the scenic designer), Capstone propelled them into new theaters of ministry – some of them even having to do with drama. Though Capstone is no longer an active theatre company, its stories and lessons continue to resonate in us. Many of our scripts here have some additional devotional content with them, to aid in the spiritual growth of cast and crew along the way. We pray you’ll find these resources a blessing and an encouragement.

DON BOSLEY is the pastor at Lighthouse Covenant Church in West Sacramento, Calif. He’s also the father of six – which doesn’t excuse what he does, but it does help us understand him a little better. He writes scripts for Capstone and other sites and also blogs about faith & family at kingsstew.com.
